How to determine Cane Height.
Approximate cane height can be determined by measuring distance from wrist to floor, when standing with arms at your side. That height can be ordered or you can trim yourself.
If you measure like in illustration to the right, the arm that is gripping the cane would have a twenty degree bend at the elbow. This is a rough guide, a physical therapist could offer more individualized advice.
The cane shaft can be cut with a hack saw or wood saw. So if you are not sure it is better to order a little long and try it, you can always trim it down a little.

The simplest type of supportive device for ambulation is a single point cane. Single point canes are effective in resolving minor instability and balance difficulties. It is the single point cane that helps prevent many falls during a walk and as a result canes are often used during the normal aging process. Canes can promote independent living skills in the home environment.

Some people might consider using a cane a detriment to living a normal life. However, earlier this century, it was considered an honor to use a cane and one had to produce a license to carry a cane in England. Walking aids should be looked upon with a positive attitude because without a walking aid one is at risk for additional injury or loss of independent mobility skills.

When you walk, the cane and your injured leg swing and strike the ground at the same time. To start, position your cane about one small stride ahead and step off on your injured leg. Finish the step with your normal leg. To climb stairs, grasp the handrail (if possible) and step up on your good leg first, with your cane in the hand opposite the injured leg. Then step up on the injured leg. To come down stairs, put your cane on the step first, then your injured leg, and finally the good leg, which carries your body weight

Another way to estimate the appropriate correct cane height is by the user's height.

Order a 38 inch cane if you are 6'4" to 6'7"
Order a 37 inch cane if you are 6'0" to 6'3"
Order a 36 inch cane if you are 5'8" to 5'11"
Order a 35 inch cane if you are 5'4" to 5'7"
Order a 34 inch cane if you are 5'0" to 5'3"
Order a 33 inch cane if you are 4'8" to 4'11"
